Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)

Narcissistic Personality Disorder is very common mental illness which brings on a very large sense of self. Many of those who have NPD tend to hold themselves very high above others while showing a deep admiration for themselves. Individuals who have this disorder can be very difficult to deal with. With such high self-esteem and little regard for others around them, narcissists can be very unpleasant to be around. They also can pose a sense of danger as well; many times–depending on how severe the disorder is–individuals with Narcissistic Personality Disorder believe themselves to be invincible and can put themselves and the people around them in danger in the event they try to prove a very adventurous–and foolish–point. Though individuals with NPD can be arrogant, manipulative, and self-consumed, many times–underneath the surface–there lies a very vulnerable person.

Those with Narcissistic Personality Disorder tend to have a very difficult time keeping work and personal relationships due to their arrogant and aggressive nature. Furthermore, individuals with NPD tend to be very short-fused; if they do not automatically get what they want, how they want it, they are a (dangerous) and erratic force to be reckoned with. Oftentimes, NPD can be treated with vigorous sessions of therapy as well as medication such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications. The symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder are as follows:

The Symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder:

  • High levels of arrogance
  • Has an amplified sense of self-importance
  • Needs constant attention and admiration from others
  • Takes advantage of others
  • Very self-entitled
  • Believes they are highly superior to others
  • Expected to be praised and recognized without warrant
  • Cannot recognize the needs of others
  • Believes that they are always being envied
  • Obsessed and distracted with fantasies of power, beauty, intelligence, and romance

The best way to treat Narcissistic Personality Disorder is through psychotherapy. With psychotherapy, one with NPD will be able to learn how to relate to the way others feel and how their actions affect those around them. Therapy sessions will also help them be more aware of how their own emotions make them feel and where they derive from.
